Timolol belongs to a group of drugs called beta-blockers. Timolol is an eye medication used to treat glaucoma (high pressure in the eye) alone or with other medications. Timolol Maleate ophthalmic solution is a non-selective ß-blocking agent and blocks both ß1 and ß 2 adrenergic receptors.
Timolol (Maleate) is similar in action but more powerful than propranolol. It is available for both systemic and ophthalmic use. It slows the heart rate and reduces hypertension and prevents the recurrence of myocardial infarction (MI), but mainly used in glaucoma, by a local conjunctival instillation as eye drops.
Timolol Maleate Dosage
The initial recommended dose of Timolol is one drop of 0.25%. The drug should be applied twice in a day at evenly spaced intervals. If the drug response is not adequate, the dosage may be changed to one drop of 0.5 percent solution twice a day.
The dosage should be kept applying till the pressure in eyes does not decrease. After that the drug can be reduced taking to one time only. All instructions mentioned on the label should also be complied carefully. Take the drug exactly as prescribed. Also do not discontinue its use without speaking with your doctor.
Before instilling eye drops wash hands without fail. Do not touch dropper with anything. Keep it safe and clean. Tilt the head back and keep eyes open while putting eye drops. Keep eyes closed for 2 minutes after putting drops. Do not blink also.
Timolol Maleate Side Effects
All medications may cause side effects. Timolol can also shows some side effects at times. The side effects it shows are minor and major both. Minor side effects are harmless. No need to worry about them.
Some of the minor side effects of Timolol are irritation in eyes, headache, depression, double vision, nausea etc. Experiencing these side effects is very common. Almost every person taking this drug may go through any one of these effects. They disappear in some time. Some major side effects are also a part of Timolol.
Stop using the drug and at once seek medical attention if experience side effects like irregular heartbeat, breathlessness, weight gain, dizziness, swelling on legs etc. These side effects if not given immediate treatment can be dangerous for life also. Do not take any chance with them.

Storage of Timolol Maleate
Right storage is like nourishment for Timolol. If the drug is not given right storage it will become outdated. Hence, be attentive towards its storing. First step is keeping it in room temperature. The range can vary in between 15 to 30 degree Celsius.
Extreme temperatures are not good for it. Heat, light and moisture are also not suitable environments for Timolol. Keep it away from their effect. Keep Timolol bottle in tightly closed container. The container should be stored at a secure place. Children should not be able to reach to the drug.
Protect Timolol from freezing. Timolol is colorless. If anyhow it becomes discolored, throw it away. Get a fresh drug. On expiration, it is important to discard the drug as soon as possible. Using expired drug is harmful for health.
Precautions for Using Timolol Maleate
People allergic to Timolol, beta blockers or any other medications are advised to take Timolol on medical recommendation only. It is a precautionary step helps in maintaining eye health.
If already on any prescription or non prescription drugs inform about them to your physician especially if you are taking beta blockers drugs such as atenolol, carteolol, esmolol, labetalol, metoprolol, nadolol, propranolol, sotalol, and timolol; quinidine; verapamil etc. it is all-essential to inform doctor about them.
If using another eye medication also for the other cause, keep a gap of 10 minutes in putting Timolol eye drops and the other drug. People with lung disease, heart disease, diabetes etc. should use Timolol after discussing about these problems with healthcare provider.
Likewise, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers should also use Timolol after getting prescription from doctor. If become pregnant while using Timolol, at once inform your doctor about it and then proceed with the drug. Take out lenses 15 minutes prior using the drug. Also put them back in after 15 minutes of putting the drug.
Vision becomes blurred for sometime after using Timolol Maleate ophthalmic solution. Do not rub eyes. Avoid driving or operating any other machinery as well. If going to have any kind of surgery, inform doctor about the use of Timolol. If develop any eye infections or anything during the use of this medication, discuss about it with healthcare provider and on advice only continue the drug use.
